yo girl, what's your major?

I slack.
Went up to Ithaca/Binghampton this past weekend with Hoey for the opening of the Nick Wilson Memorial Skate Park in Newark Valley, which is a small town in the sticks, with a population of about 1500. Nick Wilson died while fighting over in Iraq, in a town of 1500, that seems to hit everyone who lives there....
The whole scene was like something out of a movie. It was cold and rainy. The color guard was there. The Mayor was there. A priest was there. The police shut down the road in both directions for the ceremony where a bunch of people from the town were gathered. Nick's brother flew in from Texas(he's in the airforce) and read some words(i'm pretty sure that info is accurate, i might have people confused). It was a pretty surreal sight.
People rode bikes and had fun. The sun came out.

Aside from that. Upstate kids are pretty awesome.

Growing a sweeeet 'stache.

Kelly Baker, siked, throwing out Manmade stuff.

Steve Crandall punched me in the teeth and then handed stuff out.

The 7th Grade class in town made a bunch of signs that were posted all over.

People.

Nick Marzolino. This kid is the reason all of this happened. He wrote Nike a 150 word essay in a "why should you have a skatepark in your backyard contest" but instead of writing about why he should have a ramp in his yard, he wrote about how he wish there was a ramp/park to remember his friend in his town.

Jon Capozzi

After Toby(above) failed at shotgunning a rockstar, this little kid shook one up, exploded it in his face, and then pounded it. Pour Toby.

Little kids upstate like to breakdance.

I'm going to steal some photos from Brian Tarbell later in this post.

Mike Spinner didn't even show up.

This was the only run I took. Straight to flat nose diving.

Patrick the cat is fucking awesome.

I left my camera in Hoeys car with him while I disappeared for the night. This is what I got.

Endwell is hard.

Hancock and John Lee will be on LI this weekend.

Hoey. Artfag flare.

Chris Hancock is the more in control of his bike than anyone I've ever met.

Over under.

these are what I stole from Tarbell.

This photo is titled 'berr in a coffee cup'
Atleast I'm eating an apple though.

John Lee.

Wishes he owned a Lorenzo Scarf

Keith Terra.

I've had the AIM converation saved since the 3rd of July, and a .doc file named "sukadickterra" sitting on my desktop since last Friday.
I been slackin.

Keith Terra.

Ain't scared.

FuckBMX:
so when did you get into bmx, and how?

Keith Terra:
you could say that i got into bmx when i first learned how to ride a bike when i was 5. i remember within a week of learning how to ride a two wheel i was jumpin off curbs and darting into traffic in queens. and when i moved out to LI when i was 6 kids in my neighborhood had jumps at the end of the block and i would try to jump what i could. but i didnt get into racing till i was 8. a friend of mine that i played baseball with raced and shoreham. and one sunday i went there with him. and the rest is history

FuckBMX:
how long was it before you started racing nationals and traveling for bmx after you started?

Keith Terra
id say about two years. i did my first state series in 1990 when i was 10 and started traveling for nationals that year as well. i raced nationals before then, but only local ones within the tri state area

FuckBMX
cool, so how long did it take you to move up the ranks? what was your first real expert race?

Keith Terra
it only took me a couple weeks to move up to expert. i turned x by the time i was 9. i believe i turned up opening day in the 89 season. back then it was only like 5 wins to move up to novice and 8 to expert. i had a straight win streak to ex.

FuckBMX
damn, so you more or less only raced expert... did you win any titles? how many?

Keith Terra
yea..pretty much my whole race career was in ex and superclass. i didnt win many titles though. i did win #1 sate the first year i raced. and then i raced it for fun in 94 i think and won it that year as well. but i never got national #1. i got #2 in cruiser the last year i raced it in 93 i believe...yea..93...13 cruiser. wildest indoor grands track in memphis, tn. they had an over and under bridge.

1993 Shoreham BMX Country.

FuckBMX
thats sick, whats the wildest track youve ever ridden?

Keith Terra
fuck...theres been soo many. Evansville, IN was probably one of the best tracks. it was by far the fastest track i've been to. way faster then southpark. i thought the track was fast when i first raced it at 15 years old. then i went back there when i turned pro...and it was even faster.

Keith Terra
and of course shoreham from the years 93-98...the place was almost like trails. you had to be on your game to ride that place good.

FuckBMX
so how long did you race before you moved up to super class?

Keith Terra
umm...about 9 years
started racing at 8 years old..turned superclass when i was 17

FuckBMX
nice, how about a sponsor list? i know you went through some of the better teams in your day...

Keith Terra
yea..i've had a few...
my first sponsor was MCS/Eagle Snacks.
then there was Shoreham BMX country. that was a good team.
Rich and Gary Soper were on it along with Iarocci and myself.
Then Base picked me up. iwas real stoked on that. but i only raced for them for like half a season. shortly after Supercross wanted me to ride one of there crazy frames and ride for them. so i did...haha. good thing that only last about a year. then TNT offered me a ride and quickly took it. rode for them for a couple years. Then i rode for Standard bykes. that was the best team i was on.

Terra and Iarocci

FuckBMX
you were one sbc in it's prime... when everyone who was anyone outside of racing rode a standard... what was it like being a part of that?

Keith Terra
yea..i got on at a good point of SBC. it was pretty wild being a part of that. traveling to contests with people like Joe Rich, Sandy Carson, Luc E, Moliterno, and the list goes on. i mean i knew all those guys prior to standard. but i would only see them at the trails and other spots. i was never a part of something like that. things were real solid.
so it seemed...then i couldnt stand it anymore. its hard to explain.

FuckBMX
what percent hip hop would you say you are now that it's 2009 rather then like 1999?

Keith Terra
haha
i'd say the same
about .5%

FuckBMX
do you still play game boy on the regular instead or riding street spots?

Keith Terra
ha...i wish i did
i never had a game boy...and on that trip someone had one and i played it the whole time
haha

FuckBMX
so in 1998 you wrote a pretty infamous letter... i only know you as a loving young man, where in your heart did that letter come from? why did you decide to go through with it?

Keith Terra
boy i'm gettin tired of explaining this..haha

FuckBMX
i wouldnt have asked, but i heard you challenged him and catfish to a 3 way one night...

Keith Terra
well..it all stared that Nyquist came to our trails to film for a video without asking anyone. he showed up..filmed...didnt really talk to me or anything. and that kind of pissed me off.
and actually it was Robo's idea for the letter. and i went along with it. it wasnt really directed towards Nyquist. i just used him as an example. it was how these dirt jumpers were called trail riders. just cause you can hit 3 straight doubles...doesnt mean your a trail rider
and its the fault of the media...they labled them as one
haha..did i challenge him and catfish

FuckBMX
yea, at supes party...
you even called mulligan and possibly tunney to alert the media

Keith Terra
i called mulligan about presenting at nora cup
i remember that

FuckBMX
did he say yes?

Keith Terra
he said he'd think about it

This photo is shot by Mulligan, and stolen off Keiths Facebook. It's one of my favorite bmx photos ever though.

FuckBMX
if nyquist wins a cup, and you going to punch him in the kidney?

Keith Terra
haha..na. me and nyquist are friends now

FuckBMX
why didn't you guys fight that year at the Christmas classic? are there still I hate Terra shirts floating around?

Keith Terra
i didnt want to do it. it was a funny idea...but at the same time it would just make the both of us look stupid. parade us around like a bunch of clowns. no thanks
and i think supe's had one shirt. i think i have an "i love terra" shirt

FuckBMX
i'm pretty sure he actually made 10 of each...
did you win the dk dirt circuit that year?

Keith Terra
no..there were more. he sold a bunch at the christmas classic that year
haha..no i didnt.
i did make the finals though

FuckBMX
I just checked the facts, you would be happy to know that Foster won, and Nyquist didn't even podium.

Keith Terra
hahaha...hellz
got to love BF
actual living legend

.
FuckBMX
what were your top 5 trails to ride back then

Keith Terra
i'd say 7-11, oak park, posh, nam, drexelbrook

2008 Panamoka

FuckBMX
once sevs got plowed, how did long island change?

Keith Terra
it seemed like the scene broke apart
at sev's there was a huge session there every weekend.
everyone would come down..hang out..chill.
when the trails got plowed. it seemed like no one really saw anyone anymore. and shortly after that oak got half plowed down.
i moved to PA after the sev's got plowed. it felt like there was nothing for me on the island anymore

FuckBMX
thats crazy, was there ever a period where you thought that you might just be done with trails?

Keith Terra
no..never
but i almost fell off bmx completely back in 03
i was goin through bad times with some personal things....was drinkin too much...didnt ride for like 3 months.

FuckBMX
top 5 long island riders pre 2000?

Keith Terra
haha..pre 2000..hmmm...
Brian Iarocci, John Lee, Ronnie Gaska, Tim Strelecki, Matt Vietch
Vietch did the best switch footed tables i've ever seen....EVER

FuckBMX
when did you completely call it quits with racing? any reason? is there a comeback in the works?

Keith Terra
it was when i was 18 in 98. it was out southpark day 1. the reason why i quit i was gettin tired of crashing due to other people that dont know how to ride a bike...whether it being people fallin infront of me..or into me..or on me.
that race when i quit...i was superclass main and someone passed me in turn #2 to take 3rd place from me...i let him pass cause i knew i could pass him over the pro jump. but lucky me he unclipped and fell right infront of me.
walked back to the Standard tent, told Moliterno to take me out for day 2 cause i was done racing for good.
and a comeback...there might be

FuckBMX
tuesday nights at shoreham sound like theyre going to be pretty sick... it would be a good time to get back in it

Keith Terra
i'm thinking of it. but that track is sooo long.
haha

(Keiths Current Track time is 48.25 seconds.)

FuckBMX
i need to run to the store and buy some candy real quick... so heres a few questions.
1. top 5 trails currently
2. top 5 riders currently
3. best 3 videos you appeared in...
and then some thank your or whatever

Keith Terra

top 5 riders....BF, Chase Hawk, John Lee, Darryl Tocco, Aitken.
best 3 videos appeared in....1201, Base Neighborhood Superheros, Standard Domination

Keith Terra

Keith Terra
haha..maybe not miller light

Trail jam... kinda.

I had all of my camera gear in the car, planning to shoot photos...
but before the time came, the whole session died. Scott took it to the face pretty good and was out for a couple of minutes...
I was going to post a few pictures of the aftermath, but instead, heres a puppy.

And a clip of Nick.

Ron also told me he had a separate column in his spread sheet that listed individual weights, but said "that shit is top secret, and you're just making fun of me."

This man was to modest to do a full on interview, but I got these questions out of him.

Why do you ride a more or less all chromo race bike when most other
people are riding aluminum and carbon?

I had two bikes, a chromo trail bike and an aluminum race bike. I felt like
constantly switching bikes was preventing me from getting 100% comfortable
on either of them so I decided to build a bike that I could use for both.
For a trail riding bike aluminum was out of the question and besides one or
two headset spacers I have never had any carbon on a BMX bike of mine.

What's with those crazy cranks?

The 'crazy cranks' as you say, along with the gigantic looking front
sprocket and the V brakes are part of the racing side. The cranks are super
stiff and the big gear and V brakes are just more reliable than a small gear
and 990 brakes.

With all the Sunday/odyssey parts you run, it hardly looks like a race
bike... What's the deal?

The Odyssey and Sunday parts were also on my aluminum race bike when I had
it. They don't scream race bike but that's just because they aren't marketed
towards racing. That stuff is light weight, high quality, and super strong.

Any shoutouts?

Yeah, a lot of people helped me get this bike together:
Chuck at Quality Collision, John at Sign Designs, Nuno at Odyssey, Rick at
Standard, and Steve at Bike Discounters.
Also, Rich Soper helped me out with some stuff and my wife Lynnsey gets a
shoutout whenever I get the chance.

I stole most of these photos from his facebook, but also shot some of them.

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

I can't even steal a title from "It's Always Sunny..." because Tom already did.... The Gang Gets Racist.

South Park is the best.
Good long ass weekend. Learned some things, Mike is a griller, Rich's favorite Disney character is Tiger and Ronnie Gaska is a legend more then we though.
Team Long Island is comin up.

We watched the first 2 seasons of "It's always sunny" on this trip.

The back seat of an escalade isn't made for 33 year old men.

Folding the seats down and sitting on top is just a temporary relief.

This tree got stuck the fuck by lightning. We had a crazy storm Friday evening.

Once the storm passed, Mike Grillkullen took out his 10 lbs of chicken that had been marinating for 2 weeks and got his grill on.

Rolled in style. It's a shame you don't have rims dugan, we coulda been ridin on blades.

Bikes.

Gaska kept telling us that he wasn't a big deal and to stop making him seem like one. Until the announcer started announcing. Not only was Ronnie the last to get announced before every lap, but he was referred to as "The Legend himself" This guy is bigger than jesus.

Crazy Al Cayne clockin some footy.

In his first moto of the weekend, the G-Man showed everyone that he was NOT fucking around this year.

Dugan is also starting his comeback tour.

At one point while I was shooting photos in one of Toms races, all I could hear was the dude next to him telling him how much of a faggot he was.

Mike Grillkullen hasn't quite got his swagger back yet, but be assured that he is fucking siked and that it will return shortly.
He unclipped this weekend and left his pedals and shoes in the dumpster. Flat pedal revolution.
I sometimes make things completely up.

The first step to getting big time is our factory sponsor?

Gaska earning a demerit. Flatter than a bottle of pepsi water?

Bivs making moves from the outside.

Grillin kilkullen still has a little swagger though.

I can't believe little Matt Polkamp beat me by so much this lap.

Gaska made it to the podium, Phil Potosnak is awesome.

Gaska, opincarr, Potosnak.
